Jim Slaight joined North Avenue Capital as a Commercial Lender in 2018, specializing in business development, financial analysis, debt financing, deal structuring, and investment opportunities. Jim received his undergraduate degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and holds an MBA from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is based out of NAC’s Raleigh, NC office.
Prior to joining NAC, Jim was a career naval officer and then a management consultant for several Fortune 100 companies including Chevron, Cisco, and USAA.
During his 20 years of Navy service, Jim flew F-14 Tomcats & F/A-18 Super Hornets as an Air Wing Strike Lead & Forward Air Controller (Airborne) and deployed 6 times in support of overseas combat operations. In 2002, he was named the F/A-18 Super Hornet Flight Instructor of the Year. Jim directed strike-fighter squadron operations ($20MM annual operating budget), scheduling, resource management, training, and operational readiness. He accumulated 2,760 hours of flight time and 544 carrier landings.
Jim finished his military career as a legislative liaison building relationships on Capitol Hill with members of Congress and their staffs to fund a portfolio of Navy programs including research & development, IT, and unmanned systems. He researched & analyzed the congressional environment, budget proposals, and legislative actions to advise senior executives and prepare them for Armed Services Committee hearings.
Active in the community, Jim volunteers as a Blue and Gold Officer for the Naval Academy Admissions Office. He provides counseling and information throughout the application process to exceptional high school and college students interested in seeking a naval officer career.
