By its very definition, one could proclaim the sports and entertainment sector nothing but fun and games. Yet the ripple effects of the $83 billion category are anything but trivial. The twin industries together employ millions of people, stimulate economies both rural and urban, and support an array of related businesses, including restaurants, hotels, travel, and transportation.
Thanks to their sizable land requirement, many of the stadiums, amusement parks, and other sports and entertainment properties occupy rural territory. That seemingly inconsequential factor has a notable benefit: it can unlock competitively priced funding through the USDA’s Business & Industry Loan Program. Translation: play can be profitable, too.
In 2019, NAC had the privilege of serving a fellow resident of St. Johns County, Planet Swim, LLC, with a $5 million USDA Business & Industry Loan through the USDA Rural Development Program. A swim school for all ages, Planet Swim used the funds to build a state-of-the-art aquatic and tennis facility in the thriving Nocatee community of Ponte Vedra. NAC’s loan was used to construct Planet Swim’s primary location, which now includes a 50-meter Olympic-size outdoor pool, an indoor teaching pool, seven clay tennis courts, spectator seating, locker room accommodations, and more.
